E1 | Updates

In this module you will learn about updates are and why they’re important. You’ll also learn how to update different devices and operating systems.

  • An update is an improved version of existing software. Mobile phones, tablets, and computers all need regular updates to stay current and able to function smoothly. Outdated software might have security gaps and other vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit to obtain sensitive information, which companies in particular should try to avoid.

A distinction is made between two types of updates:

    1. Updates for apps or programs
    2. Operating system updates

Your device usually displays a notification when a new update is available. You simply have to agree to install the update, and the installation process begins to run in the background, often without you even noticing or being interrupted in your work.

  • First, let’s take a look at how to update the apps on your smartphone or tablet.

Open Settings, tap General, then tap Background Update. Here you are able to turn automatic updates on or off completely, or configure app updates on an app-by-app basis.

If you prefer to check for updates yourself, you can tap your profile icon in the App store and scroll down to see which updates are pending. There you will also find information about what the new update has improved or changed compared to the previous version.

It’s best to only allow updates to install over a WiFi connection, as update files can be very large, and downloading these outside of a WiFi connection could quickly consume your mobile data volume.

First access the Play Store, and tap on the circle with your profile picture or initials at the top search bar. Once here, tap Settings, Network Settings, then tap Automatically update apps. You could also turn off automatic updates if you would like.

If you prefer to check for updates yourself, open the Play Store and tap on the circle with your profile picture or initials in the top search bar, then tap Manage Apps & Devices to see pending updates. There you can also learn what upgrades and features the new update provides.

It’s best to only allow updates to install over a WiFi connection, as update files can be very large, and downloading these outside of a WiFi connection could quickly consume your mobile data volume.

Check the back of your device to see if an Apple logo appears there. If so, your device is either an iPhone or an iPad. All other mobile phones or tablets (whether Huawei, Samsung, or one of the many other manufacturers) are considered Android devices.

  • You now know how to keep the apps on your mobile devices up to date. This works in a similar way with your PC, notebook, or Mac, as you will see below.

Open up the App Store through the menu bar at the top of the screen and click Settings. Here you are able to turn automatic updates on and off. Another way you can check for and install updates is through the Apple menu by pressing on the Apple button. Once you are here, select System Preferences and then Software Update.

Open the Microsoft Store, and click on the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, then click Settings. Under Downloads and Updates, you will see a list of installed programs and available updates.

Programs that you haven’t downloaded through the Windows Store won’t be displayed, and you have to search for applicable updates yourself. Some programs will notify you when updates are available, while others will require you to manually check for updates from time to time, such as through the Help menu of the program itself, or on the provider’s website. While it’s more complicated, you’ll often get helpful step-by-step instructions from the provider for downloading and installing your updates.

It often helps to search for an Apple logo on your device. If you see this logo, you have some sort of Apple device. If you see another logo or another company name such as Microsoft, Samsung, or one of the many other manufacturers, your device is most likely running on Windows.

  • Your smartphone or tablet will usually let you know when it’s time for an operating system update. All you have to do is confirm the installation, and it will run automatically.  Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

Only allow updates while on WiFi.

The files associated with an operating system update are often quite large.

Connect your device to a charging cable.

Updating an operating system can take some time, and it’s important that your device doesn’t run out of power during the installation process.

    Have your login details ready.

After an operating system update is complete, your device will usually be automatically restarted. After the restart, you’ll be prompted to enter the PIN for your device as well as your SIM card PIN. iOS users will also need to sign in with their Apple ID.

Would you still like to check for updates yourself?

Open Settings, select General, then Software Update. A red circle with a number will show you that an update is available. You can now check for iOS updates at any time, and install them if necessary.

Open your settings (usually accessed through the gear icon), then scroll down and tap on System (depending on the manufacturer, it might have a slightly different name). Now look for an entry like System Update – you may have to first tap on Advanced. Tapping on System Update will show you which version of the operating system is currently installed, and whether an update is available.

  • Your desktop computer or notebook will usually provide an alert when an operating system update is available.

Here are two important tips so you don’t get caught off guard during an update:

You are able to schedule a specific time to install the update.

Your computer normally installs an update at times that you don’t need your computer, such as at night, or while shutting down or restarting your computer. But you are also able to schedule a convenient time for the update yourself – your computer will guide you step-by-step through the process.

You won’t be able to use your computer during the update.

Your computer will be running while an update installs, but you will not be able to use it during the installation. A system update might take some time, so make sure to plan accordingly.

Go to System Preferences in the Apple menu (found through the Apple button) and click Software Update. If updates are available, choose Update Now or Learn More. Here you can also enable automatic operating system updates by checking on the box labeled “Automatically update my Mac.”

Click on the square window icon at the bottom left of the screen to access your settings, and select Update & Security. Now you can check if your computer is up to date and customize when and how updates should be installed.

By the way, automatic updates are always activated on Windows to ensure that any critical security gaps are quickly addressed and repaired.

It is helpful to search for an Apple logo on your device. If you see this logo, you have an Apple product. If you see another logo, or company names such as Microsoft, Samsung, or one of the many other manufacturers, your device is running Windows.
